Educators try to debunk rumors over H1N1

SALT LAKE CITY -- Officials at the Granite School District have a reason to worry about incorrect rumors being spread about the H1N1 virus.

District spokesman Ben Horsley said, "Apparently, somebody went into a clinic and a doctor told them there were 'this many' cases at that particular school."

Horsley says this rumor spread to several schools last spring.

"We had parents passing that on to each other and then calling their principals and asking what was going on," he said.

Horsley wants to remind everyone, doctors at clinics aren't tracking cases of the H1N1 virus so they wouldn't know how many children are sick at any given school.

"Unfortunately, it was all just myth and there were no confirmed cases," he said.

District officials are warning every parent that children who appear to have flu symptoms will be asked to stay home. Horsley says there are varying degrees of panic over the swine flu.

"We've seen parents who [ask], 'Why are you bothering me with this information,' to parents who are very appreciative that we're providing a lot of this," he explained.

Horsley says if anyone has any questions about the H1N1 virus, they can call the Salt Lake Valley Health Department at 801 468-2750, or their child's school principal.

I wish they would be truthful and say if there was influenza A in the school, which may have been swine flu, but it not confirmed. This is what they were doing in my school, saying there was no swine flu when there was.
