Safe sneeze initiative launched

School children practising the safe sneeze

A new health initiative has been launched in nearly 6,000 schools and pre-schools aimed at stamping out bugs and viruses.

The Safe Sneeze Squad Programme encourages children to improve their hygiene in an effort to help stop the spread of respiratory infections. It teaches cough and sneeze etiquette such as trapping sneezes with elbows, not hands and the importance of hand-washing.

Clinical virologist, Dr Lance Jennings, says it is an important step in educating youngsters about simple hygiene practices. Jennings says, on average, an under-5 will suffer more than four bouts of cold or flu related illnesses a year.

It is hoped children will take the sneeze hygiene message home to their families.
