Lectures at the Sabaragamuwa University were suspended for two weeks from yesterday due to the spread of a viral flu among students, Vice Chancellor Prof. Mahinda S. Rupasinghe said.
He said he took this decision as a precautionary measure after consulting his staff members and medical authorities. The University?s Students Union, meanwhile, charged that around 600 students had been affected by the viral flu feared by many as the new A H1N1influenza. The Union said one student had already died of this illness which is rapidly spreading among the students.
?There are no proper medical facilities at the university. We have only one MBBS doctor visiting the university only for two hours a day. There are around 3250 students,? he said.
However, Prof. Rupasinghe said he was not sure about such a large number of students being hit by this viral flu.
Asked for comments on the student who died, he said the cause of the death was not yet known.
