South Sudan's West Equatoria State has hundreds of sick children. The fatal disease has been named "nodding disease" by the locals because of the peculiar involuntary nodding action of the children affected. South Sudan has been torn apart by warfare lasting decades, infastructure is absent or damaged and treatment for this emerging disease is lacking...

...A disease with similar outcomes is reported in Northern Uganda which shares a border with Sudan. There it is sometimes called "River Epilepsy..."
