Suspected Ebola patient isolated in Rwanda

KIGALI, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Rwanda's health officials have placed a man suspected of suffering from Ebola in isolation at King Faisal Hospital Kigali.

A statement by the Ministry of Health released on Sunday indicates that the patient had been tested with results still expected. Samples from the suspected case have been sent for testing to an international accredited laboratory, and results will be available in 48 hours, the statement said.

The suspected case is a European medical student, according to the statement. It is the first suspected Ebola case in Rwanda since the outbreak of the virus in West Africa.

Suspected Ebola case Isolated

Today late in the afternoon, a patient at King Faisal Hospital with Ebola like symptoms has been put in isolation as we wait for his test results. Samples from the suspected case have been sent for testing to an international accredited laboratory for approval, results will be available in 48 hours.

The suspected case is a European medical student. It is the first Ebola-suspected case in Rwanda since the outbreak of the Ebola virus in Africa.

The Ministry of Health calls on the public to stay calm and be vigilant, the ministry is closely monitoring the situation and all the needed preventive measures according to national standards are in place. Surveillance systems and emergency management systems have been established. Health workers have been trained across the country and are vigilant. This will enable timely detection, notification and appropriate management of any suspected cases to safeguard Rwandans.

All persons who have been in contact with the Ebola-suspected case are being monitored and have been placed in quarantine. This is comprised of nurses, doctors, health managers, cashiers and the patients who were passing by as well as private contacts.

Following Sunday's report of a patient who was identified in Rwanda with Ebola-like symptoms, the ministry of health has announced that the patient's condition is improving.



The patient, a European medical student who has recently been in West Africa, was put in isolation while at King Faisal hospital with malaria when he developed Ebola-like symptoms. He is currently in the isolation facility in Kanombe while doctors wait for the results of medical tests to determine whether the man is actually infected with the hemorrhagic fever.



On Monday, however, Minisante reported that the patient's temperature had significantly gone down and that he is recovering well from the malaria and other symptoms.



Other people who were also put in quarantine, including nurses, doctors, health managers, cashiers, patients as well as other people who had been in contact with the European man, have not shown any signs of Ebola at this time and are doing well.

Following yesterday?s report of a patient who was identified in Rwanda with Ebola like symptoms, the Ministry of Health would like to inform the public that the patient?s condition is improving.

As we await for the results from the samples that were taken for tests, we would like to assure the public that the patient is at our isolation facility in Kanombe and as of today, his temperature has significantly gone down and he is recovering well from the malaria and other symptoms.

Other people that were put in quarantine among them, nurses, doctors, health managers, cashiers, patients as well as other people who had been in contact with the suspected case have not shown any symptoms or signs of Ebola at this time and are doing well.

Our surveillance and response team will continue to follow up on the situation and constant updates will be shared with the public as they come through.

The Ministry of Health calls on the public to stay calm. Ebola hemorrhagic fever is a highly contagious disease transmitted from person to person and characterised by fever, headache, joint and muscle pain, sore throat, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pains and bleeding. It is not an airborne disease.

The government has put in place measures aimed at protecting Rwandans from Ebola but is also cautioning Rwandans to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases immediately.

Surveillance systems and emergency management systems are in place. Health workers have been trained across the country and are vigilant. This will enable timely detection, notification and appropriate management of any suspected cases to safeguard Rwandans.

WHAT IS REQUIRED FROM THE PUBLIC
? To immediately seek medical attention at the nearest health facility in case
someone presents signs and symptoms of Ebola or call our hotline on 114.

CURRENT SITUATION
Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever has not been confirmed in Rwanda, what we have now is a suspected case. The Ministry of Health has elaborated plans to effectively respond should the disease occur within our borders.

"We would like to inform you that the suspected case of Ebola tested negative," the Ministry of Health said in a statement.

Following previous reports of a patient who was identified in Rwanda with Ebola like symptoms, the Ministry of Health would like to inform the public that results from the samples that were taken from the patient for Ebola tests are negative. The tests were done at an internationally accredited laboratory.

This implies that he does not have Ebola hemorrhagic fever. Currently, the patient is recovering well from malaria.

There is no Ebola in Rwanda but due to population movements, there is risk that Ebola can spillover to Rwanda at any time. The Ministry of Health urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases immediately.

Ebola hemorrhagic fever is a highly contagious disease transmitted from person to person and characterized by fever, headache, joint and muscle pain, sore throat, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pains and bleeding from all body openings. It is not an airborne disease.

The Ministry of Health through the emergency preparedness team continues to take actions for preparedness and response to prevent potential health risks that might be caused by Ebola.
