Russia reports 55 official swine flu cases

MOSCOW, August 3 (RIA Novosti)
A total of 55 people have been diagnosed with the swine flu virus in Russia, the country's chief sanitary official said on Monday.
"We have confirmed 55 [swine flu] cases, although there are some suspected cases, so this number is rising," Gennady Onishchenko said.
He reiterated that all the people diagnosed with swine flu in Russia had recently returned from vacations or business trips abroad, mainly from Britain and Spain, and also from Turkey and Bulgaria.
Swine flu cases have been registered not only in Moscow and central Russia, but also in the Volga Region, the Urals, Siberia, and most recently on the island of Sakhalin in Russia's Far East.
The total number of laboratory confirmed A/H1N1 cases stands at about 170,000 worldwide, with over 1,000 deaths. No lethal cases have been registered in Russia so far.
The first batch of a vaccine against the A/H1N1 swine flu virus is expected to be ready in Russia by October 1.
Onishchenko earlier said Russia would produce 16 million doses of the swine flu vaccine by the end of the year.
