Centers of bird flu detected in eight districts of the Kaluga region
18 Jul '22

According to the news agency of the publishing house "Kaluga Gubernskiye Vedomosti", as of July 17, centers of highly pathogenic avian influenza were detected in eight districts of the Kaluga region.

The data was provided by the regional anti-epizootic commission. By the decree of the Governor Vladislav Shapsha, bird flu quarantine was announced in the regional center and the Dzerzhinsky district of the Kaluga region.

Outbreaks were recorded in Babyninsky, Maloyaroslavetsky, Zhukovsky, Sukhinichsky, Dzerzhinsky, Zhukovsky, Borovsky districts and one of the suburbs of Kaluga. After sampling and analysis of samples of pathological material in all affected farms, the H5N1 virus was detected.

An epizootic investigation showed that the source of the infection was a batch of poultry purchased at fairs in early July. The previous meeting of the anti-epizootic commission was held on Friday, July 15. At that time, outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza were recorded in six municipalities. As a result, it was decided to start veterinary and sanitary measures from July 18, including the removal and destruction of poultry in personal subsidiary plots and farms (including small private farmsteads) with payment of compensation to the owners.

To date, in seven out of eight outbreaks, the bird has been completely eradicated. The possibility of introducing a state of emergency for highly pathogenic avian influenza in those areas where there are large poultry farms is being considered. PRODO Poultry Farm Kaluga JSC was in the first quarantine zone. It is recommended that manufacturing enterprises strengthen biological safety measures and switch to a shift method of work, and farmers - to free-range poultry.
