MOSCOW, April 10 (RIA Novosti) - Around 1.1 million birds have died of bird flu in Russia while 0.3 million have been culled in measures to control the spread of the virus since February 3, the Emergency Situations Ministry said Monday.
A wave of bird flu hit the south of the country in February, but a massive vaccination campaign launched in March has prevented an epidemic, a ministry spokesman said.
Of the 1.377 million bird deaths since February 3, 280,000 were culled, he said. "A vaccination campaign has been ongoing in Russia since March 10, with 17.844 million birds vaccinated in 62 Russia's regions."
The ministry said a total of nine areas in southern Russia, a stopover for migrating birds, had been hit by the lethal H5N1 strain of the virus, which returned to the country in February, following outbreaks last year.
Russia's agriculture ministry said last week that this year's major outbreak of bird flu in southern Russia had been contained, with only 10 out of 67 villages still under quarantine as of April 5.
