Federal investigators on Wednesday announced that they would conduct an inquiry into the growing number of meningitis cases around Russia, as Moscow health officials said three city teenagers had been hospitalized and diagnosed with the illness.

Earlier this month, two children in the Rostov region contracted meningitis and died, while more than 30 children who attended a kindergarten in the southern Russian city were hospitalized after receiving the same diagnosis.

Following that outbreak, several cases appeared in neighboring regions, prompting concern from parents...

Russian health ministry calms fears over meningitis outbreak

Russia?s health ministry sought to reassure parents in the Russian capital, Moscow, on Wednesday after 10 children were rushed to hospital with suspected meningitis.

?Cases of enterovirus infections arise periodically in summer in all Russia?s regions, and also in other countries. Currently, regional authorities are taking all necessary steps with regard to individual cases in which the enterovirus infection has been complicated by serous [viral] meningitis. The ministry has this issue under control,? a Russian health ministry press officer said on Wednesday.

There is a heightened awareness of the illness in Russia after a spate of hospitalizations, and one reported fatality, in several regions in southern Russia.

Dozens of children have been admitted to hospital in recent months in outbreaks in the Rostov and Lipetsk Regions.

In total, over 180 people in the Lipetsk Region have been confirmed as having a virus that is associated with meningitis, and 100 of them were hospitalized, a local official told RIA Novosti on Tuesday. In 46 of those cases, the patients were given a clinical diagnosis of meningitis, with lab results confirming this in 23 cases, the local official added...

Four children with meningitis found on Sochi-Moscow train

4 out of 17 children taken off the Sochi-Moscow train in Kursk on July 16 had meningitis. A total of 292 children were on the train. Six children were hospitalized in Kursk, 9 in Voronezh, one in Oryol and one in Moscow, ITAR-TASS reports.

More Meningitis Cases Flare Up in Russia's South

A number of children suffering from symptoms of meningitis have had to be taken off trains heading from Russia's south to Moscow, and two of them are in serious condition.

Two children that were taken off a train traveling from Sochi to Moscow due to illness on Tuesday have been diagnosed with meningitis, while eight more from the same train remain under medical supervision, RIA Novosti reported Thursday.

All of the children affected are currently receiving treatment in a hospital in Kursk, an Emergency Situations Ministry representative said.

Cases of meningitis came into focus after an outbreak in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don in early June killed two children and infected at least 55.

Elsewhere, nine children returning from a Krasnodar children's camp on a different train were taken to a hospital in Voronezh, another report said...
