Rs. 1,000 fine for spitting in Pune

Staff Reporter

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), effective Saturday, imposed a Rs. 1,000 fine from Saturday for spitting in public places, to contain the spread of swine flu.
Presently, the fine was only Rs. 25. Speaking to The Hindu, PMC spokesman Sanjay More said Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Zagade had used the special powers vested in him by the Urban Development Department of the State government under Section 319 of the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporation Act, 1949.

The step also falls within the purview of the Defacement of Public Property Act, 1995. He added that the step was taken because the swine flu virus remained alive in sputum for eight to nine hours. ?The measure would remain in place till the swine flu pandemic is eradicated from Pune,? he said.

Detection squads

?But with or without swine flu, spitting in public is a bad habit.? Nuisance detection squads in every ward office would take action against the offenders. These squads consist of ward officers, zonal commissioners, and divisional sanitary inspectors.
