An example, between December 1 and 4, there were 45 measles hospitalizations alone. We are talking about exponential growth. Until 1-2 years ago, there were 1-2 cases per day or per week. And now, we have 15-20 cases daily. And in children, it's even worse that it also occurs in adults."

The Ministry of Health has declared a nationwide measles epidemic

Given the alarming increase in measles cases, as well as the large number of hospitalizations in the pediatric and infectious disease wards of infected children, the Ministry of Health has declared a nationwide measles epidemic, to make it possible to vaccinate children between the ages of 9 and 11 months, as well as the recovery of those unvaccinated or with an incomplete vaccination schedule.

At the moment, almost 2,000 cases are registered nationally, in 29 counties.

Also, the Ministry of Health will run an information campaign for parents, together with family doctors, for better adherence to the vaccination program.

Measles is an infectious disease that is easily transmitted, especially in unvaccinated children, and sometimes the evolution is serious and complications can occur.

We mention that vaccination coverage with the first dose, at the national level, is 78%, and with the second dose, 62% of eligible children, being on a downward trend for more than 10 years.

The recent adoption of the National Vaccination Strategy has in mind precisely the elimination of these risks for public health, caused by diseases preventable by vaccination.

The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) informed on Tuesday that, in the last week, 445 confirmed cases of measles were reported in Romania.

According to the INSP, until December 10 (January 1 - December 10, 2023) 2,010 confirmed cases of measles had been notified in 29 counties and in the municipality of Bucharest. At the latest report, on Tuesday, the number increased, having reached a a total of 2,455 cases (reference period January 1 - December 17, 2023) confirmed with measles in 34 counties and in Bucharest..​

In the course of one year, a total of 2,805 cases of measles , respectively three cases of death, were reported in Romania by the INSP , and the number of cases increased in a week by almost 100 - reports the Maszol portal quoted by Rador Radio Romania.

In the case of deaths, it is about two 7-month-old infants from Braşov county, who could not yet be vaccinated with the 3-component serum, and the third victim was a 35-year-old man from Bucharest who was not vaccinated against this disease and had other problems.

The cases were reported from 34 counties and the capital. The most cases are from Mureş County (761), Braşov (657), Cluj (201) and Bucharest (378).

The Romanian Ministry of Health had announced the epidemic at the beginning of December, making it possible to vaccinate children aged 9-11 months, respectively, and immunize children not yet vaccinated. The competent minister also specified the fact that the epidemic manifests itself so virulently because of the large number of unvaccinated children.
