The National Institute of Health, Islamabad, confirmed Head of Pathology Department at Rawalpindi Medical College Professor Dr Abbas Hayat positive for swine influenza on Wednesday.

The prominent microbiologist suspected himself as a case of swine influenza ? commonly known as swine flu ? a few days back when his swap sample was sent to the NIH for confirmation.

Talking to ?The News?, Dr Abbas said that he has given lift to a patient from emergency department of Benazir Bhutto Hospital last week. ?The elderly patient was with complaints of cough and sneezing and I doubt that I got infection from him,? said Dr Abbas who is undergoing treatment at his residence.

Dr Abbas is the only case in town within the last one week who has been confirmed positive for swine flu, said In-charge Infection Control Committee at Holy Family Hospital Dr Javed Hayat while talking to ?The News? on Wednesday. He added that since December 31, a total of 16 suspected cases of the infection have been reported at HFH including case of Dr Abbas Hayat.
