Riverside High Closed Until Tuesday; All Schools On Guard

The two sites housing Riverside High School are closed today and Monday so parents can "assess" if their children are ill after tests confirm at least some of the 19 students sent home Thursday with flu-like symptoms have swine flu, or the H1N1 virus.
Three of the 19 students were tested for the virus, and those three tested positive for H1N1. All of the 19 students must stay home for seven days, and be symptom-free before returning to school.
All other students will be assessed before returning to class at Riverside High on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the district is urging parents throughout the district to keep their children home if they have flu-like symptoms. If students come to school with flu-like symptoms, including a cough, sore throat, and a fever higher than 100 degrees, they will be sent home.
If the illness does not enter the school again, all students would ideally be back at school before year-end exams.

3 Riverside High Cases Confirmed as Swine Flu
Riverside High School and its Hertel Avenue annex will be closed until Tuesday after school officials say 19 students have been confirmed to have flu-like symptoms. Three of those cases have now been confirmed to be the H1N1 Virus, also known as Swine Flu.
At a Thursday afternoon news conference, Buffalo School Superintendent Dr. James Williams says the district has been monitoring attendance levels at Riverside over the past 48 hours and decided to close the two buildings as a precaution.
Williams said the shut-down will give parents an opportunity to determine if their children are suffering from flu-like symptoms and to contact their health care providers.
It will also give the district time over the weekend to completely sanitize both buildings.
Letters have gone home and phone calls have been made to parents informing them of the situation.
When school re-opens on Tuesday, nursing staff will be in place at both locations to screen every student and staff member entering the two schools. Anyone who is determined to have flu-like symptoms will be sent home.
Dr. Williams says the district has been pro-active in urging parents, students and staff to wash their hands often and make sure they're putting cleanliness first. He asked parents to please keep their children home and contact their doctors if they believe them to be sick.
He added the district is doing and will continue to do whatever is necessary to make sure every child is safe and healthy.

Health Related Issue: Riverside High School
[FONT=verdana,helvetica][SIZE=-1]The Buffalo Public School District has been monitoring attendance rates at Riverside High School for the last 48 hours. Nineteen students have had flu-like symptoms confirmed by nursing staff and have been sent home. As a precautionary measure and in consultation with the Erie County Department of Health, I am closing Riverside High School for two days. Tomorrow, Friday, June 5 and Monday, June 8 both the Hertel Avenue site and the Ontario Avenue site will be closed. The purpose of this closure is to give parents an opportunity to determine if their children are experiencing flu-like symptoms and to contact their health care provider, if necessary. During this time, we will also thoroughly sanitize both school sites.
