Health: the poliomyelitis epidemic declared in Niari

Thursday, March 23, 2023 - 3:05 p.m.
:

According to a March 23 press release in Brazzaville, the representation of the World Health Organization in Congo notified the Ministry of Health and Population of the confirmation, by the laboratory of the National Institute of Biomedical Research in Kinshasa , of a case of poliomyelitis due to a strain derived from vaccination.

Since poliomyelitis is a potentially epidemic disease, a single case constitutes an epidemic. To this end, the Ministry of Health and Population declares the poliomyelitis epidemic in the department of Niari, more precisely in Dolisie. This is a 15-year-old child whose paralysis dates back to October 15, 2022.

Faced with this situation, the government, with the support of partners, decided on the following actions: in-depth epidemiological investigation at the level of the communities concerned to enable the implementation of appropriate public health measures; the reinforcement of epidemiological surveillance by the active search for cases in the health facilities and in the community concerned (this surveillance is coupled with the sensitization of households) and the reinforcement of routine vaccination.

In the coming days, the statement said, an initial vaccination campaign plan will be developed and sent to the government and partners for the purpose of obtaining the funding and vaccines required for the response. Similarly, an extraordinary meeting of the inter-agency coordination committee will be organized to validate the micro-plan and mobilize resources.

The government is taking all the necessary measures to respond to these health emergencies. He urges the population to use the nearest health services in the event of any suspected case.
