Covid-19: Cases increasingly occurring among young people, officials say

Six further deaths reported and 23 new cases as reproduction rate ‘at or above one’

All new cases of Covid-19 reported on Thursday were in people aged under 44, and 77 per cent were among under 25-year-olds, the National Public Health Emergency Team reported.

This was the first time officials had seen such a concentration of cases among younger people, acting chief medical officer Dr Ronan Glynn said.

And of the 23 new cases reported on Thursday 15 were “directly or indirectly” related to travel, according to Dr Glynn.

Another six deaths of people diagnosed with Covid-19 were reported by the Nphet on Thursday. This brings to 1,743 the total number of deaths from the disease in the Republic.

The 23 new confirmed cases of the virus reported on Thursday brings the total number of cases to 25,565.

The Republic of Ireland has decided not to move forward to Phase 4 of its roadmap for easing lockdown amid concerns about the spread of Covid-19.

"This virus has not changed, indiscriminate in its cruelty and relentless," said the taoiseach.

"The concern about the rise in cases in recent weeks is very real, the R (reproductive) number has risen above 1 in this country," Miche?l Martin said.

"The international situation represents a growing worry."

ptions are being prepared for the Irish government on how to restrict non-essential travel from countries outside the UK and European Union, according to the Republic's health minister.

Stephen Donnelly said he was "concerned about high rates" of coronavirus in some countries, in a tweet on Sunday.

The number of travel-related cases in Ireland is currently thought to be low.

However, Mr Donnelly said "the risk is increasing".

This brings to 28,578 the total number of cases of the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and leaves the death toll in the Republic at 1,777.

Of the cases confirmed on Friday, 52 are in Dublin, 13 are in Monaghan, nine are in Tipperary, eight are in Meath, eight are in Wexford, eight are in Roscommon and the remaining 29 are located in Carlow, Cavan, Clare, Cork, Galway, Kerry, Kildare, Kilkenny, Limerick, Longford, Louth, Offaly, Waterford, Westmeath and Wicklow.

Around 80 per cent of the cases are people under 45 years of age, while 70 of the confirmed cases are men and 57 are women.

The reproduction number stands at 1 to 1.2, according to Prof Nolan, who is chairman of the Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group.

Prof Nolan expressed concern about a rise in the number of patients requiring hospitalisation, now at 42, up from a low of under 10 one month ago. But admissions to intensive care, at eight on Wednesday, remain stable.

A further 89 confirmed cases of Covid-19 were reported by the public health emergency team today. This brings the total number of cases in the Republic to 29,114.
