UK Covid live: more than 20 health trusts declare critical incidents but No 10 says it’s not a good performance indicator

  • The PM’s spokesman said:

We know that there are a number of trusts that have reported critical incidents.

I believe it’s more than 20 currently, but that number will fluctuate. But again, those critical incidents can vary in terms of their scale, some can relate to one part of the trust, some can be across the whole trust. So it’s not a good indicator, necessarily, of NHS performance at any one time.
  • The spokesman played down the significance of the report that one ambulance service is asking some patients to consider getting a lift to hospital (see 11.28am), saying that this was just one trust and that “the public will still receive the quality of care they expect from the NHS”.

French President Emmanuel Macron has received backlash after saying he wants to “piss off” the unvaccinated as he looks at restricting freedoms further to ban those who have not been jabbed from accessing entertainment venues.

During his first interview of the year with French newspaper Le Parisien, Mr Macron used the term “emmerder”, which can also be translated as “to get on their nerves”, to describe the strategy he intends to adopt against those who still have not been jabbed.

France's daily Covid-19 cases top 270,000 as Omicron sweeps Europe

The more-contagious Omicron variant of coronavirus drove the number of confirmed cases in France to more than 160,000 per day last week and more than 200,000 for four consecutive days over the weekend.

France on Saturday became the sixth country in the world to report more than 10 million Covid-19 infections since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to official data.

"The tidal wave has indeed arrived, it's enormous, but we will not give in to panic," Health Minister Olivier Véran told parliament.

The World Health Organization says that it is monitoring a coronavirus variant detected in a small number of patients in France, but that, for now, there is little reason to worry about its spread.
