Iron deficiency and anemia caused by this deficiency are major health problems in many children around the world. These disorders are associated with poor neurodevelopmental and growth problems.

Some years ago the World Health Organization withdrew its recommendations early cord cutting. But in many countries there are no formal guidelines about when to take out this separation. The study included 400 babies born at term with low-risk pregnancies. Some had cut the cord after three minutes and others to less than ten seconds after delivery.

The results showed that babies who delayed the court had better iron levels at four months old and had fewer cases of neonatal anemia.

Scientists estimate that if the infant is left attached to the cord for at least three minutes after birth can improve the volume of blood in 35% iron.

In addition, the study found that the delay in cutting was associated with adverse health effects. According to the authors, "the court delayed cord should be considered standard care for births at term after uncomplicated pregnancies."

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of UK has no specific recommendations on when to do the cut cord, but is calling for more studies on this topic.

"Iron deficiency in early life is associated with neurodevelopmental delay, which may be irreversible," says the agency.

"It is not known if increasing placental transfusion by delaying cord cutting can improve neurodevelopment in early childhood but this hypothesis should be investigated in larger randomized trials," he adds.
