KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia reported 75 more cases of influenza A/H1N1 on Monday, bringing up the total case of the disease to 434 in the country.

Malaysian Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai said that among the new cases, 41 were imported while 34 were locally transmitted.

He noted that among the new reported 34 locally transmitted cases, nine patients were the participants of the four-day Asia-Pacific Pharmaceutical Conference which concluded on June 30 in Penang, northwestern Malaysia.

Liow said that among the total 434 people confirmed with the disease in the country, 343 have been declared fully recovered, while 91 patients were still under treatment in hospitals.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian Deputy Health Minister Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said that 45 new cases of A/H1N1 flu had been confirmed in Malaysia here on Wednesday, increasing the total number in the country to 513.

Rosnah said that the total 513 cases in the country involved 378 imported cases and 135 locally transmitted ones, but no fatality so far.

She told the upper house of the Malaysian parliament on Wednesday that the A/H1N1 flu spread between humans and the virus would not harm the public who consume pork.

Rosnah clarified that the virus was produced through a process of mutation from the flu virus genes, which was a mixture of flu virus genes from swine, avian and human, quoting the information released by the World Health Organization in April.

She also said that A/H1N1 flu tests were carried out for 17,459 specimens from 672 pig farms in Malaysia, 191 specimens showed positive for the classical swine flu, with no specimen tested positive for the A/H1N1 virus.

Rosnah reassured the senators that the classical swine flu was not infected through human beings and only occurs among pigs, according to local media.

A(H1N1) : 45 new cases detected

PETALING JAYA (July 8, 2009) : Forty-five new cases of influenza A(H1N1), 22 local transmissions and the rest imported, were detected yesterday bringing to 513 the total number of cases confirmed since the outbreak in May.

A statement from the Health Ministry today said out of the 513 cases, 430 (84%) have recovered while 83 are being treated at designated hospitals.

To date no death has been recorded in the country.

Of the latest cases, 38 are Malaysians, four Indonesians, one New Zealander, one Yemenese and one Indian.

The 23 imported cases had travelled to Indonesia (11), Australia (3), Philippines (3), USA (1), Macau (1), Hongkong (1), Thailand (1), New Zealand (1) and Singapore (1).

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said there was an influenza-like illness reported at the Malaysian Maritime Academy (Alam) in Kuala Sungai Baru, Melaka, involving 50 trainers.

"Laboratory tests confirmed six of the eight samples taken from the group were positive for influenza A(H1N1)," he said.

"All 50, who showed similar symptoms are quarantined in an isolation block in the Alam complex and are treated with antivirals."

Twenty of the local transmission cases are Malaysians including five participants from Asia Pacific Pharmaceutical Conference (APPC) held in Penang last month and four trainers from Alam.

The Health Ministry urges those who have returned from infected countries but do not show any symptoms of the illness to conduct self-monitoring as stated in the health alert card distributed upon arrival at the KL International Airport.

Mohd Ismail reminded the public who are under quarantine to strictly follow the 10 guidelines of home quarantine, "To all local students who feel ill or have cough and flu, immediately get treatment from the nearest doctor, limit direct communication with people and refrain from attending school and other classes," he said.

The Health Ministry also advised the public to postpone trips to countries affected by the A(H1N1) influenza as it increases the risk of being infected and being quarantined in the particular countries.

H1N1 Quarantine Only For Educational Institutions

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 (Bernama) -- The health ministry currently only issues Influenza A (H1N1) quarantine orders for educational institutions, including schools, as the risk of disease propagation is high, affecting a large number of people.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said generally, quarantines were no longer done on a routine basis as the ministry was sure the people would give due cooperation and adhere to measures to prevent and reduce the spread of the infection.

He said, in the 24 hours leading up to 8am Tuesday, there had been only three positive H1N1 cases, including two siblings who had just returned from a trip to Bandung, Indonesia on July 11.

"Both were warded at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital on July 16 and 18, due to complications of pneumonia, and were confirmed having contracted H1N1 yesterday.

"They have been given anti-viral treatment and are now in stable condition," he said in a statement today.

The other case is a local transmission involving a 32-year-old man who works in a private company dealing with local and international clients.

"He has been admitted to the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Hospital due to complications from pneumonia and tested positive for H1N1. He is now in stable condition and on antiviral treatment," said Dr Ismail.

Meanwhile, the Standard 5 Lotus class of Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Subang Bestari in Shah Alam, Selangor, which has 43 pupils, has been directed to close until Monday.

The directive was issued after 15 of its pupils were absent due to Influenza Like Illness (ILI). Besides that, the class was also attended by one of 871 cases of H1N1 local transmission who received treatment at the Sungai Buloh Hospital.

Dr Ismail said the ministry would continue monitoring the health of the pupils to ensure the situation was under control.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the country was now at the mitigational stage in handling H1N1, which focuses on patient treatment at hospitals.

"Now, we can monitor all places with the epidemic and do random sampling... we cannot take in every sample anymore, because there are too many," he told reporters after launching the 17th International Healthcare Exhibition and Seminar by the Association of Private Hospitals here today.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Xinhua) -- The Malaysian Health Ministry reported 44 new A/H1N1 flu cases on Wednesday, bringing the number of total cases in the country to 921.

The ministry said that 909 or 97 percent patients of the disease had recovered, 11 or 2 percent patients were still receiving treatment in hospitals, while four or 1 percent patients were undergoing home quarantine for out-patient treatment.

Meanwhile, a university was closed on the day in Permatang Pauhin the Penang State, northern Peninsular Malaysia, after its ten students tested positive for the A/H1N1 virus.

The university with total 5,000 students was closed for seven days, when its 200 students developed flu symptoms and had been quarantined at their homes or hostels on the day.

Second H1N1 death in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: A 46-year-old Malaysian man who worked in Belgium has died from influenza A (H1N1), making him the second fatality in the country since the flu outbreak.

He was reported to have died from ?severe pneumonia with respiratory failure with septicaemic shock and acute renal failure? after being treated at the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Subang Jaya for a week.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said the victim had returned to Malaysia on July 4.

?He was all right until he went for a holiday with his family in Langkawi on July 13 where he developed fever and cough.

?On his return from Langkawi, he sought treatment at a private hospital in Petaling Jaya on July 16 where his chest X-ray showed that he had pneumonia,? he said in a statement issued here yesterday.

Dr Mohd Ismail said the man was then referred to the private hospital in Subang Jaya on July 19 and was warded at the ICU.

Tests conducted by the Institute of Medical Research on July 22 on a sample taken from the man?s throat confirmed that he had been infected with the H1N1 virus.

?Complications developed and the man died at 12.35pm yesterday (on Sunday),? he said.

On July 21, a 30-year-old Islamic finance student from Indonesia died from H1N1.

Dr Mohd Ismail said the latest fatal case was among seven cases categorised as sporadic or isolated.

Six other local cases in the same category included three who were warded ? one for pneumonia and the others being a pregnant woman and a young student.

The other three are from one family and they received outpatient treatment.

Dr Mohd Ismail also disclosed that 49 new cases were reported yesterday, all involving locals, bringing the total number to 1,124.

Of the figure, 574 were imported cases.

He said 1,103 cases (98%) had recovered while another 10 were being given anti-viral treatment. ? Bernama

19 New H1N1 Cases Today

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 (Bernama) -- Nineteen new Influenza A (H1N1) cases were reported Saturday, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 1,390.

All the new cases involved Malaysians.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said of the total new cases, 14 were from three new clusters and five from two existing clusters.

He also said that of the total H1N1 cases reported in the country so far, 574 (41 per cent) were imported cases and 816 of them were local transmissions.

"Of the total cases, 1,362 or 98 per cent have recovered, only 17 still receiving anti-viral treatment in hospitals. Eight of them are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) while 11 people given anti-viral treatment at home," he said in a statement here today.

Globally, 182,886 Influenza A(H1N1) cases with 1,206 deaths were reported in 165 countries until today.

Dr Mohd Ismail said there was no new confirmed Influenza A(H1N1) admitted to the ICU today and that one of the nine cases admitted to the ICU yesterday had been transferred to an isolation ward.

The remaining eight cases in the ICU included two obese persons, a pregnant woman and one with low immunity, he added.

In a related development, he advised institutions of higher learning in the country to immediately report to the Health Ministry if there were cluster cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) among their students.

He said students having ILI when they went to register should be asked to go home and told to return when they had recovered.

Influenza A (H1N1) screening would be conducted if there were moderate and serious infections, complications or risks, like obese and asthmatic, and they would have to be referred to hospital, he added.

He was clarifying on a statement for the ministry's matriculation students to go for the Influenza A (H1N1) screening, if they have symptoms of flu, before going to the colleges to register.

Meanwhile in PENANG, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said hospitals would source for more Tamilflu and Relenza, the two main anti-viral drugs used in treating Influenza A (H1N1), following a steady rise of daily reported cases.

"The current stockpile of ten percent is not enough looking at the fast spread rate of the contagious disease. We need to order the drugs from the World Health Organisation (WHO) now to ensure there is enough supply at all times," he told reporters after attending the Penang MCA convention today.

He said Ministry would order for 200,000 doses of anti-A(H1N1) flu vaccine and expected to get them by the end of the year.

He also said that an inter-ministerial meeting on H1N1 would be held on Tuesday.

"The meeting will be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and all state governments are expected to attend the meeting," he added.

Malaysia's health ministry says two children infected with swine flu have died, bringing the country's deaths related to the virus to six.

The ministry said an 11-year-old boy died Sunday and a 10-year-old girl died Friday.

Malaysia has reported 1,429 swine flu cases sice May.

The virus has infected more than 130,000 people and killed more than 800 worldwide since the outbreak was reported earlier this year.

The woman had given birth to a baby girl two weeks earlier and had been in the Miri Hospital?s intensive care unit since then. The baby is healthy.

MIRI: A 24-year-old native woman suffering from Influenza A(H1N1) died at 4am on Monday, a mere two weeks after giving birth to her first child at the intensive care unit of the Miri Hospital.

Her baby girl is safe, Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam said, adding that this was the state?s first reported death from the deadly flu.

The woman, from here, was warded on July 17 after she contracted the disease. At that time she was already in an advanced stage of pregnancy.

The hospital managed to help her deliver a baby girl a few days after she was warded. The baby has been handed over to her father, a labourer in his late 20s.

?This is the first death in Sarawak due to A(H1N1). We (the Sarawak government) have increased the alert level throughout the whole state now.

?Nobody can take this disease lightly anymore,? Dr Chan said.

The Miri Hospital tightened security and safety by several notches to prevent any spread of the disease.

Its director Dr Uma Devi had issued directives to staff not to allow little children to enter the wards if they are not there for any health-related purposes.

Visitors are not allowed to bring babies or little kids to the wards anymore. Old folk are also discouraged from entering unless they are there for health checks.

Smokers are also barred from coming near the wards.

Dr Uma said the tighter safety measures are needed as those who are weaker have immune systems that can be easily attacked by the H1N1 virus.

The Sarawak woman brings the total number of deaths in Malaysia to seven, the previous being an 11-year-old boy who died in Johor Baru on Sunday.

"The accumulated number of influenza A (H1N1) cases in Malaysia as at 8am this morning was 1,460, with eight deaths.

?Of the 1,460 case, 574 or 39.4 per cent were imported and 886, local transmissions," he said after chairing the meeting of the National Inter-Ministerial Committee on the H1N1 Pandemic here.

He said 1,410 of the patients had recovered and only 27 were still getting antiviral treatment in the hospitals, with 10 cases in intensive care, while 23 were receiving anti-viral treatment at home.
