    • Two polar foxes (Vulpes lagopus) have been shot and will be sent to the National Veterinary Institute for further diagnostic investigation.
    • There is reason to believe that rabies is present in polar population of different species in the area and in particular among polar foxes.
    • The affected fox attacked two dogs at the Hopen Meteorological Station.
    • The affected fox was killed by two other dogs.
    • The personal at the station will be vaccinated. All dogs at Hopen are vaccinated against rabies.
    • Note by the OIE Animal Health Information Department: Rabies has never been reported in mainland Norway. The disease has sporadically been diagnosed in fauna in the archipelago of Svalbard.
