A PREVIOUSLY healthy young mum has died in The Prince Charles Hospital after falling ill with the flu.

Mother of four Katrina Day, from Woombye, on the Sunshine Coast, had been in the hospital's intensive care unit for more than a month.

She's the third Queenslander to die in the hospital from flu complications in three weeks following the deaths of a 16-year-old boy and a man, in his 50s.

Her husband, Nick Day, spoke to The Courier-Mail last week about his wife's illness, wanting to warn people about the dangers of the flu, even in people who are fit and healthy.

Flu epidemic not over yet: Qld Health

From: AAP August 27, 2012 6:26PM

WHILE the number of medical notifications is falling, Queensland Health (QH) says it's too early to say the flu epidemic sweeping the state is over.

QH says it can't confirm three people have died from flu complications in the past three weeks - including a 38-year-old woman who died on Monday.

The Courier Mail reports the mother of four had been in the Prince Charles Hospital's intensive care unit for more than a month before she died.

More details here. Her husband is a miner. The residence is less than 200 miles from the pig farm that has been quarantined due to the deaths of 10% of its stock thought to be due at least in part to a new flu virus that one article said is suspected to be a human virus.

Mrs Day came down with cold and flu-like symptoms in mid-July but her husband said it was "nothing major" initially.

Her condition worsened over the weekend of July 21-22 and she went to hospital with difficulties breathing.

"They checked her out and sent her home," he said.

"They couldn't find anything wrong."

Mr Day called an ambulance the next morning when she deteriorated.

"She was having a shower and the water was hot as, but she was freezing, white as a sheet, and her lips were blue."

She had more surgery on Wednesday night to remove congealed blood from her right lung...
