Two other cases of COVID-19 have been reported in two elementary schools in Quebec, Les Pr?s-Verts and Jules-?mond, bringing to four the number of schools in the capital to be affected by the virus since the start of the school year.
About 20 elementary school students and 80 secondary school students are now on forced leave in Quebec.
Les Pr?s-Verts school is located in the Lebourgneuf sector and Jules-?mond school, in the Val-B?lair sector.
These two establishments are in addition to Polyvalente de Charlesbourg and Jean-de-Br?beuf secondary school, where positive cases were also reported on Sunday.
In these two establishments, approximately 80 students were placed in administrative segregation for 14 days. Students with the virus contracted the virus outside of school.
No outbreak
At the Polyvalente de Charlesbourg, the two cases are not linked, so we are not talking about an outbreak.
For their part, students with a "low" risk level may continue to attend school. The parents of these students are still advised to watch for the possible appearance of symptoms.
If a child develops symptoms, it is recommended to keep the child at home, notify the school administration and follow public health recommendations.
“We're going to hope we don't have an outbreak. But there are going to be cases like that that will register from time to time. It's almost unavoidable when the virus is circulating in the community, ”says Dr. Girard.
All people who come in the next few hours to be screened in connection with these cases will be prioritized, adds Dr. Girard.
“If you have symptoms, you are told not to go to school and to call to see if you could benefit from a test,” recalls Dr. Girard.
Regarding the three cases of students declared positive for COVID-19, the Regional Directorate of Public Health indicates that the isolation rules have all been observed.
Distance learning
In the two school service centers concerned, it is also ensured that distance education will continue for students who are on forced leave.
Computers or tablets will be distributed to students who do not have them at home, it is said.
The lessons will be given remotely by the usual teachers and according to the normal schedule. They will be given a work plan.
At the Quebec Region Education Union (SERQ), it is rather stated that confusion reigns in this area. "Who is going to do what?" It’s very confusing at the moment, ”says interim president Daniel Gauthier.
Schools had until September 15 to put in place an emergency protocol that provided for the measures to be put in place in the event of a class or school closure.
Education Minister Jean-Fran?ois Roberge has promised that schools will be able to "switch" to distance learning within 24 hours if a class or school is closed.
