CALGARY - An Alberta hog operation that is under quarantine after pigs on the farm contracted the H1N1 virus is located in Clearwater County, municipal officials confirmed Thursday.
County administrators would not identify the farm --which made international headlines when pigs at the operation contracted the new flu virus that has been infecting humans--but said it's located in the large rural municipality that surrounds Rocky Mountain House.
"We were advised yesterday the hog operation under quarantine is in Clearwater County," said Ron Leaf, the county's municipal manager.
The animals were exposed to the virus after a worker on the family-run farm returned from Mexico with flu symptoms in what's believed to be the first time the influenza strain, formerly called swine flu, has been found in pigs.
More than a dozen countries have since banned Canadian pork and live hogs, dealing a major blow to producers.
Alberta Agriculture has only said the farm is in the central part of the province and would not provide further details Thursday.
A report on the World Organization for Animal Health's website also said the farm, which has more than 2,000 pigs, is located in Clearwater County.
The document said some 450 pigs were sickened after a carpenter hired by the farm owner travelled to Mexico, returned April 12 and became ill two days later.
