Pune: Man critically ill with H1N1

PUNE: A 51-year-old man from Katraj is critically ill and on ventilator support in the isolation intensive care unit of Bharati hospital after he tested positive for the pandemic H1N1 virus on March 5.

Since January, the Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) has tested 68 throat swabs. One sample from Nashik had tested positive for H1N1 infection on January 19.

"In Pune, there has been no case of swine flu infection in the last three months, said state epidemiologist Pradip Awate. "The last reported case was found in the cantonment area in December," he added.

Since April 2011, the number of H1N1-positive cases found in the state has been 32, he said. Of these, three people - one each from Nashik, Kolhapur and Sangli - had succumbed to the infection.

"The H1N1 virus is entrenched in the community, hence, one or two cases will continue to be seen periodically," Awate said.

The patient from Katraj developed symptoms like fever, cough and slight breathlessness from February 21. "Initially, he was admitted to a private hospital in Bibvewadi. The throat swab test conducted at a private designated lab, revealed him to be positive for the infection on March 5," said the city's health chief S T Pardeshi. The last reported case within the Pune Municipal Corporation limits was on October 22, he said.

HINI patient still critical; doctor says sporadic incident

The condition of the 51 year old autorickshaw driver suffering from adult respiratory distress syndrome caused due to the H1N1 virus, continues to be critical, doctors from Bharati Hospital at Katraj said. Dr Sanjay Lalwani, at the Bharati hospital said that the patient is on ventilator support. However this is a sporadic case of the swine flu infection, Lalwani pointed out.

The patient was brought to the hospital on Monday evening (March 5) for treating pneumonia. He had already slipped into ARDS and was put on ventilator support. Examination of the throat swab samples at Religare laboratory tested positive for the H1N1 virus and he was put on anti virals like Tami flu and antibiotics.

On their part though, the Pune Municipal Corporation's chief medical officer Dr S T Pardeshi said that the health authorities were not taking any chances and conducting a surveillance of 100 households in the Bibvewadi area. We have informed private hospitals to keep an eye on patients who have extreme cold and cough and even refer to Naidu hospital.
