Preventive Measures Against Bird Flu in Tamil Nadu
Chennai: The Veterinary Research Station conducted an investigation into reports of dead crows found in certain parts of Chennai. The investigation confirmed that the crows had died due to an infection of Avian Influenza, commonly known as H1N1 or Bird Flu.
Consequently, the Central Government has urged the Tamil Nadu government to intensify disease prevention measures, not only within Chennai but across the entire state. Acting on this directive, the Tamil Nadu Health Department has stepped up its efforts to combat Bird Flu.
The Veterinary Research Station has issued a warning stating that there is a potential for the infection to spread from birds to humans, and that the disease could easily be transmitted to humans through avian waste.
Furthermore, the risk of disease transmission is heightened by the fact that mosquitoes can act as vectors, spreading the 'West Nile Virus' from infected birds or humans to other individuals.
Therefore, the Tamil Nadu Health Department has advised the public to immediately consult a doctor and seek medical treatment if they experience symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle cramps, coughing, or shortness of breath.
Meanwhile, following the incidents in Chennai, crows have also been reported dead in several other districts—including Thiruvallur, Thiruvannamalai, and Cuddalore—as well as in Puducherry. Additionally, the Guindy Children's Park was temporarily closed after birds were found dead within its premises. Commenting on this matter, officials from the Tamil Nadu Public Health Department stated: “Although crows have died due to bird flu in Tamil Nadu, humans have not been affected. As the deaths of crows are continuing, the public is advised to remain vigilant.
“There is a high probability that poultry could be affected by bird flu. Therefore, chicken meat should be consumed only after cooking it thoroughly. The Health Department is currently implementing disease prevention measures across the entire state of Tamil Nadu. Consequently, the public need not panic,” the department added.
