Poultry consumption to drop 11 percent due to avian flu in Romania

Chicken meat consumption in Romania will drop 11 percent in 2006 due to bird flu, the Romanian Rompres news agency reported on Tuesday.
Citing a survey by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the report said production of broiler chicken will drop 2 percent, down to 220, 000 tons.
The number of broiler chicken dropped 1.3 million in the first half of the year, as against the same period of last year.
Chicken meat stocks will be reduced at the end of 2006 by 10,000 tons, the survey showed.
U.S. experts predicted the chicken meat industry will straighten out in the future and the consumption will increase.
Chicken meat consumption dropped 80 percent after the outbreak of bird flu in Romania in October 2005.
The virus has cost a total of 200 million euros (about 256 million U.S. dollars) of losses in Romania, with 70 million euros (about 89.6 million dollars) in the chicken meat sector, the report said.
