Portugal begins 1st vaccination stage against A/H1N1 flu

LISBON, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Portuguese health authorities began the first stage of vaccination against the A/H1N1 influenza when receiving Wednesday the first batch of vaccines, which will start to be applied on Monday.
Portuguese Health Minister Ana Jorge said the first people to receive the vaccine will be 10,000 pregnant women in the second or third quarter, 15,000 health staff and 30,000 staff from other sectors.
The aim of the first vaccination stage is "to protect all the most vulnerable people" with more possibilities of "getting any infection," Jorge said.
It also aims to assure the "essential services" by vaccinating the health staff and other relevant sectors.
Meanwhile, the Portuguese Health Ministry and the General Direction of Health defined some three million people to receive the vaccines, which represent about 30 percent of the Portuguese population.
