Polar Poisons: Trapped Toxins in Arctic Releasing to Atmosphere
A report out July 24 2011 is more bad news for the environment. From Canada and Norway, it says the atmosphere is getting polluted due to past mistakes.
A new report reveals gravely toxic chemicals such as PCBs and the pesticide DDT, trapped for decades in ice and in cold water in the Arctic, with the warming of global air temperatures, are being released back into the Earth's atmosphere. Scientists say these chemicals can cause damage to humans including birth defects, cancers and other illnesses.
The report, published in the journal 'Nature Climate Change' on July 24, 2011, is called Revolatilization of persistent organic pollutants in the Arctic induced by climate change and it was compiled by a team of scientists from Canada and Norway. The scientists compiled their report after studying measurements of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the Arctic . . . .
