African Swine Fever makes a leap in Poland
july 29, 2019
African swine fever was confirmed last week at a Polish pig farm with 1,320 pigs, just north of Warsaw. The animal disease makes a considerable leap.
In July, 15 small pig farms and 2 less small-scale farms were also cleared earlier due to African swine fever. These were, unlike the outbreak at the company near Warsaw, all cases in the areas along the eastern border. African swine fever has been found in pig farms for years in this region.
Worrying
So far, pigs in 28 pig farms have been culled this year. The big leap is worrying. However, the fact that the virus has now been discovered in the vicinity of a region with a large pig production is also worrying. The new outbreak is in fact close to a region with a high pig density (around 600,000 pigs). The Polish Agriculture Council of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality reports this in its newsletter.
