Pinellas County, Florida

Private residents could face a fine if Mosquito Control workers are repeatedly treating or inspecting their property.

Pinellas commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday, in favor of an ordinance that enables the county to fine property owners for harboring mosquitoes on their properties.

The ordinance also allows the county to take action and lien the property owner for the cost of clean-up, after the property owner is notified, during a mosquito-borne disease outbreak.

During the 2005 West Nile Virus outbreak, officials found ponds that were breeding mosquitoes capable of transmitting the disease.

This ordinance puts a mechanism in place that would allow the county to act quickly if a mosquito-borne disease is in the area again.
