Phoenix Air Flight - Nov. 5 2014

There appears to be another Ebola flight using N173PA this time. The flight stopped at Andrews Air Force Base, which could be to pick up another CDC Team as reported in the New York doctor case and at appears that the flight is going to refuel in the Azores before heading on to wherever its destination is.

Is it common practice to change the flight/tail number?

Phoenix Air has two different airplanes equipped to transport ebola patients, each with their own tail number: N163PA and N173PA.

The tail number never changes as long as ownership of the aircraft stays within the country where it was originally assigned. Tail numbers are assigned by whoever controls civil aviation within each country.

Re: Phoenix Air Flight - Nov. 5 2014

I have attached a screenshot of the flight on its way to Africa, of which seems to be the only time it was picked up on flightradar24 just before 05:30 UTC. The FT24 site assumes that the flight is still going to the Azores as that was the last flight plan filed with the FAA so the assumed track is a bit off but even accounting for that, the flight looks like it is headed for Barnako, Mali or Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Where it is headed is speculation as the flight could have made a turn or landed somewhere other than its destination to refuel and for the crew to rest. It is very interesting that another Gulfstream that appears to be a US government owned plane (N5NBOD) flew from Atlanta to the Azores yesterday ahead of N173PA.

Re: Phoenix Air Flight - Nov. 5 2014

I was just reviewing what happened to this flight as it appears not to have returned to the US. I know that there was some talk of having the plane in West Africa on standby to fly out patients and I noticed that an agreement was signed with Norway on November 3 so it is possible that having the plane on standby in West Africa is in that agreement, and the US government is keeping N163PA on standby in the US.
