The Department of Health (DOH) advises the public to verify information before sharing posts online about global health concerns. The advisory, released on January 3, 2025, stressed that neither health authorities in China nor the World Health Organization (WHO) have confirmed the existence of the widely speculated health threat.
Social media platforms have been flooded with posts suggesting that Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), along with other illnesses such as influenza A and COVID-19, has caused severe outbreaks in China. These claims, which include reports of overcrowded hospitals and a potential state of emergency, remain unsubstantiated by credible sources.
“Reliable sources currently do not support circulating posts on social media about an alleged international health concern,” the DOH said in its statement.
“There is no confirmation from either the cited country or the World Health Organization (WHO),” the department added.
