People with respiratory illnesses need vigilance

People with respiratory illnesses need vigilance

People with respiratory illnesses such as asthma and emphysema are strongly advised to take a few simple steps to reduce their chances of contracting swine flu or becoming very ill if they do contract it, says the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation.

?Controlling asthma through using a preventer medication regularly as prescribed is really important,? says Foundation Medical Director, Dr Bob Hancox.

Dr Hancox adds that people with all types of respiratory illnesses should take extra care to look after their health as well as they can at this time.

Three deaths from swine flu in New Zealand were reported during the weekend? one each in Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch?and the Foundation was told last week that in Wellington, for example, the majority of people hospitalised for swine flu had asthma. The first recorded death of someone with swine flu in New Zealand was a 19-year-old with asthma who died on 28 June.

Dr Hancox says that the Foundation also recommends an influenza vaccine for people with respiratory illnesses because all types of influenza should be avoided. The vaccine takes about two weeks to take effect, so people should ring or email their doctor?s surgery as soon as possible to help protect themselves. Vaccinations are free for people with long term conditions until 30 September, 2009.

If people have influenza-like symptoms and are concerned about their health they should call the national Healthline first on 0800 611 116.
Dr Hancox also says that people should follow the Ministry of Health?s (MoH) recommendations regarding preventing the spread of influenza and what to do if they suspect they have influenza.

Asthmatics at risk as swine flu spreads
06/07/2009 6:36:02

The parents with children suffering respiratory illnesses are being advised to do what they can to protect them from swine flu and other types of influenza.

Three deaths linked to swine flu have seen a dramatic increase in the number of calls to Healthline. Nineteen-year-old Zachary Wilson of Hamilton died eight days ago. He suffered from asthma and had been ill for several days before his death. A 42-year-old Christchurch man and a Wellington girl who suffered from Cerebral Palsy are the other two cases.

Johan Morreau from the Paediatric Society says children with underlying conditions are as much in danger from swine flu as from seasonal influenza and parents should be concerned. He says he will be especially concerned about the impact of swine flu on children if the virus mutates.

Director of Public Health Dr Mark Jacobs says the volume of calls to Healthline went up 40 percent after the deaths were announced on Saturday. He says there will be times when people who ring Healthline will have to wait for their call to be answered, but he is urging them to patient.

Dr Jacobs says there is no reason to be more concerned now, than before the three deaths.

Asthma exacerbates swine flu symptoms

Nineteen-year-old Zachary Wilson recently died of swine flu, but it's now thought the seriousness of his condition was exacerbated by the asthma he suffered.

Asthma in combination with flu causes a two-pronged assault on our airways.

Asthma tightens them and the flu fills them with mucus. The end result is far more trouble breathing than if they would only have if they had asthma or flu on their own.

With New Zealand's high rates of asthma, this is particularly serious.

One-in four-children suffer from it, along with one-in-six adults. All up, that's around 750,000 New Zealanders.

We've all been told about reducing the risks of flu, but what about asthma?

Debra Leutenegger, a nurse and educator at the Auckland Asthma Society, spoke to Campbell Live about combating asthma.
