Re: Pennsylvania 2011-2012 Flu Season: Weeks 45-17 (Seven New Deaths; Total 11)
Week 17: Sporadic
7 new deaths; total 11
? Overall, there is very little influenza circulating in Pennsylvania.
? One hundred twenty three (123) lab positive influenza cases were reported duirng week 17, down from 169 cases reported the previous week. The number of reported cases declined in all regions of the state.
? 0.4% (less than 1 in 100) of all doctor-visits reported by sentinel physicians were attributed to influenza-like illnesses (ILI), down from 0.5% reported during week 16 and far below the threshold (2.4%).
? Flu-related Emergency Department (ED) remain low in all regions.
? Influenza viruses were detected in half (51%) of 68 respiratory specimens which were submitted to the state lab for confirmatory testing, up from 10% positivity the week before. The increase in positivity is a result of increased testing at three nursing homes with flu outbreaks, the increase does notreflect increasing flu activity statewide.
? 1, 861 total cases have been reported season-to-date. Last season, a total of 19, 039 cases had been reported by this time. The burden of illness reported so far continues to be much lighter than what was seen last season.
? Seven (7) flu-related hospitalizations were reported during week 17, down from 20 reported the week before. Altogether, 193 hospitalizations have been reported season-to-date vs. 1, 563 total hospitalizations which had been reported by this time last season.
? Seven (7) flu-related fatalities were reported during week 7 alone and they were all associated with influenza outbreaks in long term care facitlities and involved individuals over 80 years of age. Season-to-date, 11 total deaths have been reported vs. 86 flu-related deaths reported by this time last season.
? Three flu-related outbreaks were reported during week 17; 9 outbreaks have been reported this season.
? Of the 221 influenza viruses confirmed and subtyped at the state lab; 113/51% were influenza A (H3N2) viruses, 45/22% influenza A (H1N1) viruses, 53/24% influenza B and 6/3% were untypeable influenza type A.
