Patient who died at Altoona was positive for H1N1

ALTOONA - A patient at Altoona Regional Health System who tested positive for the influenza A-H1N1 virus has died, according to a press release from the health system. The A-H1N1 diagnosis has been confirmed by the state Department of Health.
The patient was 22 years old and had multiple other medical problems.
The health system has seen an increased number of cases of A-H1N1 in recent weeks and has responded appropriately, following all protocols established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the state Department of Health, according to the release.
In addition, visiting guidelines have been modified to protect patients, visitors and staff from the spread of the virus.
"Deaths occur every year from the flu," said Dr. David Cowger, the health system's chief medical officer. "This should not cause undue alarm, but should serve as a reminder to people to take the recommended precautions against infection."
Dr. Cowger encouraged people to check with their health care provider regarding immunization against both seasonal and A-H1N1 influenzas.
