ORLANDO, Fla. ? In a study of children with egg allergies, parents underestimated symptoms of anaphylaxis, according to findings presented here during the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology 2012 Annual Meeting.
These findings suggest additional educational efforts in parents of children with egg allergies are needed to improve identification of anaphylaxis, and identify risk factors that may pre-dispose misidentification.
The investigators, including Infectious Diseases in Children Editorial Board member Matthew J. Greenhawt, MD, compared responses of parent?s perceptions of anaphylaxis to established diagnostic criteria defining anaphylaxis to assess if parents could accurately recognize anaphylaxis in their own child. The standard National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease and the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (NIAID/FAAN) criteria was used to identify anaphylaxis.
