Situation Report:
Surveillance of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) Week 23, 2013
1. Universal Surveillance: Trend and intensity of the activity of influenza-like illness (ILI).
As recorded on Staff Weekly Notifiable, nationwide, cumulative ILI consultations from the SE 1 to SE 23 (December 30, 2012 to June 8, 2013) amounted to 138,306 showing an increase of 11% compared to EW 22, from 8,115 visits in the previous week to 9,018 consultations in week 23, with a rate of 135.1 per 100,000 population, presenting a similar magnitude to that of previous years for the same period, ranking boundary between the strip and the epidemic alert in endemic corridor.

Two. - Sentinel Surveillance: Monitoring Hospitalized Consultations for ILI and SARI:
In sentinel surveillance in regard to the proportion of ILI consultations, there is a strong and sustained increase in the last three weeks, representing the SE 23 7.4% (659/8.878) of all consultations .

During EW 23, the proportion of Hospitalized for Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) at the Centers Sentinels was 7.3% (182/2.503), showing an increase over the previous week (161/2.601). Of the hospitalized cases in the last week, 66.5% were children under 5 years (121/182). Regarding the admission diagnosis among children under 5 years (121), 44% was Acute Bronchiolitis, 27% Pneumonia and other respiratory infections 29%.

In the last week, the Centers Sentinels, the proportion of SARI ICU admissions was 26.2% (27/103) and the SARI deaths was 3.1% (4/129). Of the total cases of SARI Sentinels captured in Centers from the SE 1 through 23, 97 have died, among them nine were associated with respiratory viruses (1 Adenovirus, Parainfluenza 1, 2 RSV, one influenza B and 4 Influenza A H3 ).

Three. - Viral circulation
The data accumulated to SE 23 SARI sentinel surveillance show a respiratory virus positivity of 27.1% (266/981), mainly circulating Respiratory Syncytial Virus (60%), followed by influenza A H3 (16% ) and B (9%), besides Parainfluenza (10%), Adenovirus (4%) and finally the Influenza A H1N1 pdm 09 (1%).
