Paraguay mobilized military and police personnel against influenza

ASUNCION, July 7 (Reuters) - The Paraguayan Government announced on Tuesday that it will mobilize the armed forces, police, doctors and state officials in an attempt to prevent the rapid spread of influenza A H1N1 that has caused three deaths in less than a weeks in the country.

Meanwhile, the Senate passed an emergency law that allows health buying drugs and hiring support staff to combat the disease and an extension of the budget of some $ 20 million for the Ministry of Public Health.

"We invite the active forces to cope with this emergency," said Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo in a press conference that convened in the health institutions and private to join efforts to curb the advance of the virus.

The Ministry of Health of Paraguay reported three deaths and 114 cases infected by the new strain of influenza, in addition to nearly 500 suspects. The number of cases stalled by lack of reagents, said health authorities to local media.

Lugo called to calm the people calling for better care in state hospitals, which have been crowded with patients with respitarorias recent days.

"When the river is turbulent situations that involve people's lives is not good to speculate, but fishermen will multiply in the same direction," Lugo said in response to criticism.
