Since 22nd of July, measures including release of sterile insects in the field have been implemented in two (2) points, 9.5 liters of insects (approximately), weekly; this measure will be maintained for a period equal to three (3) biological cycles of the agent from the last case detected (16th August). Aerial release of sterile insects, by means of 2 weekly flights, at a dose of 3,000 flies per linear nautical mile. Specific epidemiological surveillance was carried out in all farms within a 5 km radius around Pigandí Grande case, without any other finding. Routine surveillance, health education campaigns (for local people, producers, technicians, among others) and release measures will be maintained for a period of three (3) biological cycles (9 weeks).

The call to farmers and producers for early notification of suspected cases was one of the main issues discussed at a meeting led by the Vice Minister of Agricultural Development, Alexis Pineda, as part of the actions being developed for the control and eradication of the Cattle Screwworm.

In this meeting, which took place at the headquarters of the Panama-United States Commission for the Control and Eradication of Livestock Screwworm (COPEG), located in Pacora, authorities from Senafront, Police, the livestock sector, Oirsa, producers and Regional directors participated. , of Quarantine, Animal Health and Plant Health, of MIDA.

Minister Linares and COPEG coordinate actions to control the screwworm

The Minister of MIDA, Roberto Linares, called for joint efforts between all the departments of the Ministry of Agricultural Development, the Panama-United States Commission for the Prevention and Eradication of the Cattle Screwworm (COPEG) and producers, during a tour of the COPEG facilities, located in Pacora.

Linares, who was accompanied by Vice Minister Francisco Ameglio and Secretary General Carlota Mattos, participated in a technical meeting with COPEG executives, led by the Director General for Panama, Carlos Moreno, and the Director for the United States, Celia Antognoli, where a report was presented on the current situation of the Cattle Screwworm in the country.

Copeg scientists informed the head of the agricultural sector that the sterile fly production plant is working at its maximum capacity to disperse this insect and that for this action to be effective, producers need to raise awareness about the situation.

The plant is making progress in biological control, producing almost 98 million sterile flies dispersed weekly in the areas with the largest outbreaks, mainly in the northern part of the country.

After the tour, Linares congratulated the technical-scientific team of Copeg for the effort it is making, also recognizing that despite the increase in all actions to eradicate this disease, the problem of incidence will not be resolved in a month, committing MIDA to reinforce communication and technical assistance so that producers recognize the problem and trust the results.

Sterile flies are currently spreading from Nicaragua to Panama. Among the recommendations to the livestock sector, they highlighted the importance of good production practices in their herds: supervised births, good treatment of calves' navels and dehorning activities. They reiterated to the livestock farmers to notify MIDA and COPEG so that technical personnel can take samples and give them the guidelines because this way they can contain and reduce the incidence of cases.

As of June 1, 2024, COPEG reported a total of 10,663 positive cases, while at the regional level 2,894 cases were reported in Costa Rica and 581 cases in Nicaragua.

COPEG is a program implemented between Panama and the United States that was created through an agreement signed on February 11, 1994 and became law in 1999. On July 12, 2006, the country was declared free of the plague.

Current situation of the Cattle Screwworm in Panama

Currently, the Cattle Screwworm (GBG) remains in the eradication stage with incidences of positive cases in all provinces of Panama except the Guna Yala region. As of July 7, a total of 11,212 positive cases have been reported, while at the regional level GBG is present in Costa Rica with a total of 2,894 cases since the outbreak was declared and in Nicaragua there are 751 cases to date.

The emergency response is based on three fundamental pillars:

Increase in sterile pupae production from 20 million to 92,645,209 million per week.
Increased aerial and terrestrial dispersion, with a total of 18 weekly flights and 40 terrestrial release chambers in Nicaragua that average a dispersion of more than 62 million sterile flies.
Field surveillance, including visits to farms, increased animal movement control posts (CMA) and increased health education through community training, in schools and for producers, promoting appropriate health practices.
Taking into account the above points, in order to have better control of the worms and for the eradication measures to be effective, the active participation of producers and the population is important, through good livestock practices such as: inspecting, checking animals, treating wounds, transporting only healthy animals and reporting cases of worms immediately.
