Bird flu hits poultry in Israel and the West Bank

As cases of avian flu continue to infect poultry on both sides of the Green Line, Israeli and Palestinian officials are implementing strict measures to curb the contagion's spread.

Thus far, about 15,000 birds have died from the H5N1 avian flu at the Avi'el turkey fattening farm near Hadera, and an additional 4,000 birds have suffered from the disease at a Palestinian coop near Jenin, Israeli and Palestinian authorities reported. Within Israel proper, the Agriculture Ministry said that it has begun handling some 100,000 birds at coops in the Avi'el area, and will continue monitoring poultry within 10 kilometers of this spot.

Bird flu found in Qalqiliya poultry farm

QALQILIYA (Ma'an) -- The bird flu virus has been detected in a poultry farm in the Qalqiliya district, vets from the PA Ministry of Agriculture said Wednesday.

Dr. Samir al-Fuqaha said the farm holds some 5,000 hens, 4,000 of which have now been culled.

Villages in a radius of 10 kilometers from the farm in Beit Imrin have been put under strict supervision and samples have already been taken to prevent the spread of the disease.

The Ministry of Agriculture on Monday culled 5,000 turkeys infected with bird flu in the village of Siris in Jenin.

The Israeli Civil Administration has provided equipment and medical supplies to the PA to control the outbreak
