(Pakistan) Govt chalks out plan to combat avian influenza in future

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to initiate a ?national programme for the control and prevention of avian influenza? at a cost of Rs 1.180 billion across the country.

The government has taken this step to combat any future outbreak of bird flu through proposed activities, like avian influenza surveillance and reporting handling of disease out breaks. The local funding for the projects is Rs 1.003 billion and foreign exchange contribution of Rs 176 million makes the total cost of the project to be Rs 1.180 million.

Ministry of food, agriculture and livestock (MINFAL) is the sponsoring agency of the project, while its executing agencies include MINFAL and provincial livestock and dairy development (L&DD) departments.

Purpose of the project is to diagnostic capabilities, quality control of evaluation of avian influenza vaccine, training and awareness of staff, farmers and public, research and development, compensation of enforced culling of highly pathogenic avian influenza infected poultry and legal framework for animal health.
