Another dengue patient admitted to PIMS

ISLAMABAD, Oct 09, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- MCLS -- Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on Friday confirmed that another dengue fever patient has been admitted in the hospital for treatment. According to hospital sources, the blood samples of 16 years old Aasia from Kashmir which were sent to the National Institute of Health (NIH) for investigation reported positive after which the patient has been shifted to isolation ward.

They said with this new case the number of admitted dengue patients at PIMS increased to five included Astan Khan (50) resident of Abbottabad, Muhammad Rizwan (22) Haripur, Safeer (17) from Golra and Mursaleen (5) from Islamabad. They said the hospital has started treatment of new patient and bearer-nursing has been adopted and a team of doctors including Dr. Nighat Bilal, Dr.Jamal Zafar and Dr. Iqtida Haidar Sherazi are providing treatment to all dengue patients.

Dr. Wasim Khawaja from PIMS said that dengue is a mosquito-borne infection which in recent years has become a major public health concern. He said dengue is found in tropical and sub-tropical regions, predominantly in urban and semi-urban areas. He said dengue is transmitted by the bite of an Aedes mosquito infected with any one of the four dengue viruses while symptoms appear in 3-14 days (average 4-7 days) after the infective bite.

He added dengue fever is severe, flu-like illness that affects infants, young children and adults. He said there is no specific treatment for dengue fever however, careful clinical management by experienced physicians and nurses frequently saves the lives of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) patients.

15 suspected dengue patients hospitalised

KARACHI: Sindh Health Department has said 15 more suspected dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals of the city during the last 24 hours.

According to a report on Tuesday, 523 cases of suspected patients with strong fever symptoms were registered this year, and out of them 328 were confirmed, whereas four patients died.

Total admitted patients are 28. They were admitted to different hospitals of the city during the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, 25 patients have been discharged from different hospitals during the last 24 hours. ppi

41 dengue patients hospitalised in 24 hours

KARACHI: The Sindh Health Department said on Thursday that 41 patients were admitted in different hospitals of the city on suspicion of dengue fever during the last 24 hours.

As per detail, 647 cases on doubt of dengue and strong fever were registered during the current year, out of them 400 were confirmed as dengue virus. So far five patients have died of dengue in the province. Sixteen patients were admitted in Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, four in AKU Hospital, four in Civil Hospital Karachi, four in Ziauddin Hospital, seven in JPMC and six in Liaquat National Hospital. ppi

Another 19 dengue patients hospitalised

Nineteen dengue patients were admitted in different hospitals across the city on Monday, said a notification released by the Dengue Surveillance Cell.

Apart from these newly admitted patients the number of already admitted dengue patients in the hospitals across the city is 48. Among them 26 are admitted in Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, four in Agha Khan Hospital, five in Liaquat National Hospital, four each in Civil Hospital Karachi and Jinnah Post Medical Graduate College, three in Sindh Government Hospital, and two patients are admitted in Civil Hospital Sukkur.

The total number of suspected dengue patients Since January this year has now reached to 1101. Among them the test results of 654 patients were positive and 447 were confirmed negative. Seven deaths have also been reported due to dengue fever since January.

Dengue claimed nine lives in City

KARACHI - Increasing reports of Dengue Fever (DF) and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) cases have become the talk of the town, as the death toll due to this disease within nine months has increased.
The City?s hospitals receive only a few patients affected with the fatal disease, which is quite low as compared to the actual figures. Dengue Surveillance Cell, set up by Sindh Health Department, is unable to maintain correct statistics of the disease affected people, an official of the health department told The Nation on Wednesday.
Dengue Surveillance Cell has confirmed the death of two more patients infected with dengue fever.
It is a mosquito-borne infection that causes a severe flu-like illness, and sometimes a potentially lethal complication called dengue haemorrhagic fever. As per the cell, Muhammad Afzal (35), resident of Qasba Colony, died of dengue fever on November 16 at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
On the other hand, Ms Khadija (36), resident of Orangi Town, passed away on November 21 at the same hospital. The cell has confirmed that around dozens of people with the complains of high-grade fever, vomiting, abdomen pain and rashes on skin are admitted to several hospitals of the City, including Ziaudin Hospital, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Civil Hospital Karachi, Sindh Govt Qatar Hospital, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Complex, Liaquat National Hospital, Seven Day Hospital, OMI Hospital, Ankle Sariya Hospital and Aga Khan University Hospital.

Four more dengue patients admitted

Four new dengue virus patients have been admitted in hospitals in the last 24 hours of Tuesday, according to the Dengue Surveillance Cell. The number of suspected patients is still high (1305), and 803 people have been confirmed positive for being infected with dengue virus.

The months of September and November saw a huge increase of the virus with an influx of patients at the hospitals.

So far 9 people have died from the dengue virus with 19 patients still admitted in hospitals across Karachi. However, doctors claim that the virus will get mild at the end of December. At the same time, experts and doctors have warned and urged people to take precautionary measures to protect themselves from mosquitoes.

Since the spread of dengue virus in the city, doctors have time and again urged the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) to fumigate the city and dispose off the garbage found at every nook and corner which works as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Meanwhile, six people have been discharged from different hospitals in the city. The details of number of patients still admitted in hospitals include Agha Khan Hospital (4), Civil Hospital Karachi (4), Ziauddin Hospital (4), Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (3), JPMC (1), Liaquat National Hospital (1), Seven Day Hospital (1) and Civil Hospital Hyderabad (1).

Six more dengue patients hospitalised

According to Dengue Surveillance Cell six new dengue patients were admitted in hospitals across the city on Wednesday.

After these six patients the number of total suspected dengue patients in the year has reached to 1343 out of which 812 were confirmed positive while 531 were confirmed negative. Nine deaths have been reported. These statistics are from January 1, 2009 till December.

Doctors and experts say that dengue is not endemic and should not be feared as such and these patients have died due to Dengue Shock Syndrome and not due to the disease as per se.

Moreover 22 patients are still in hospital and five have been discharged. Presently Abbasi Shaheed Hospital has 14 dengue patients, Aga Khan Hospital has 2, Ankle Saria Hospital 1, Ziauddin Hospital 2, Liaquat National Hospital 1 and Sindh Government Qatar Hospital 2 dengue patients. While Civil Hospital Karachi and Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre claimed to have no dengue patients.
