Health authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have asked all public and private hospitals to remain alert for cases of Mpox after more than two dozen infections were recorded in the province over the past year.

Officials say 26 confirmed cases have been identified through provincial surveillance and laboratory testing.

The patients include 18 men and six women.

The advisory was issued after health departments observed a rise in suspected case referrals and confirmed infections reported by hospitals.

Early cases linked to travel

According to officials, the first infections were largely associated with travellers returning from Gulf countries.

Several patients had reportedly tested positive before being deported to Pakistan...

KARACHI / SUKKUR: An outbreak of mpox, the first local outbreak of the zoonotic viral infection in the country, has claimed the lives of at least four newborns in Khairpur, it emerged on Saturday.

The worrisome child health situation involving death of seven newborns in two Khairpur hospitals took an alarming turn when the provincial health department confirmed that “initial findings showed that four of the seven children [who died] were affected by mpox”.

Sources said the seven babies affected by mpox were under treatment in intensive care units at public and private hospitals in Khairpur and seemed to have acquired the infection from unsterilized equipment.

All the samples were analysed at the Sindh Public Health Laboratory, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) and the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), which confirmed seven cases of mpox.

According to a health department statement: “A review by medical experts, however, indicates that their deaths were not directly caused by mpox. All children who died were premature, too weak and had low birth weight. They were already suffering health complications caused by malnutrition.”

Ayesha Khan Ansari April 10, 2026

KARACHI:

Sindh is facing a growing health threat as monkeypox cases surge, with 14 infections reported so far this year - including 12 in Khairpur and two in Karachi - and five fatalities. The outbreak has alarmed health authorities, prompting immediate emergency measures across the province.

The second monkeypox case in Karachi was confirmed recently in a 22-year-old resident of the Buffer Zone area, who was admitted to the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Nipa. Hospital officials confirmed the patient has no travel history. He has been isolated and is under close medical observation. Earlier this year, Karachi had recorded another case involving a 31-year-old who had returned from abroad.

The provincial Health Minister Azra Pechuho announced that emergency measures are in place to contain the virus. Isolation units have been established in major government hospitals, and doctors and nurses have been provided with protective equipment, including gowns, gloves, and masks...
