MITHI: Three more children died due to malnutrition and shortage of food in Sindh?s arid region of Tharparkar, ARY News reported.


At least 63 children have died due to lack of food supply and malnutrition.

The shortage of medicine in the government run hospitals is also proving to a factor in the death of the children.

Sindh Government, on the other hand, has claimed that they are not responsible for the fatalities in the district.

MITHI: At least nine more children and a mother, who had just given birth to her baby, lost their lives in the drought-hit Thar desert on Thursday, raising the death toll to 100 this month.

The outbreak of water-borne diseases and malnutrition teamed up with the cold weather caused the children to lose their lives in different areas of the district.

Three infants Mithan Bajeer, Bilawal Khokhar and Ismail Junejo died in Civil Hospital Mithi, while four year-old Rubina and an year-old female child lost their lives in Shadi Rind Chhachhro and Dabro Junejo Mukhtara villages respectively.

KARACHI: As reports of deaths in Tharparkar crossed the hundred mark, Sindh Health Minister Jam Mehtab Dahar on Monday said the media is 'misreporting' the number of children's deaths in the drought-hit region.

Official estimates record the death toll at 112, with over 100 deaths reported in January alone. But Jam Mehtab maintains the number of deaths is far less.

"In the past month, only 32 children have died," he said. "Doctors in Thar are complaining that the media is reporting incorrect facts and figures about deaths in the region."

Currently, there are only 141 doctors and only 14 ambulances serving 265 ?functional? health units in Thar. Out of these, the health department manages only 92 health units, including six rural health centers, four taluka hospitals, a few dispensaries and the Civil Hospital of Mithi.

But many others are in shambles. The government?s tall claims of providing healthcare facilities to nearly 1.5 million people are questionable, since many of these facilities are left closed and unattended. Dispensaries and Basic Health Units (BHUs) are often bolted shut, and patients cannot go inside.

In some cases, patients are forced to sit on the floor since there is no proper seating arrangement or furniture. The shortage of lady doctors is also a problem for many villagers, especially women with young children.

Dr Mohan Lal, a child specialist in Mithi Civil Hospital, said waterborne diseases related to dysentery, typhoid, diarrhea and gastro have directly lead to an increase in child deaths.

MITHI: Poverty, early marriages, nutrition, preterm births, lack of awareness, education and drought are main reasons of the death of children in desert areas of Tharparkar of Sindh. Weight of most new-born babies, being admitted to District Headquarter Civil Hospital in Mithi for treatment, is 500 grams to two kg. The District Headquarter Civil Hospital in Mithi serves about one million inhabitants of Thar, coming from villages and towns, large and small. There is a facility of 13 ventilators in Mithi Civil Hospital.

Dr Shocker Mohan Lal of Mithi Hospital told the journalists of Islamabad who came to visit the hospital that most of preterm babies are admitted to the hospital in serious condition. He said that the main reasons of death of new-born babies are due to no proper family planning, hygienic condition and no proper rest of mothers. He said that a mother has eight to ten children and she looks after her family, cattle and works in the fields. He said that most of mothers of far-flung areas give birth to preterm babies due to lack of proper rest. He said that 50 % preterm babies whose weight from 500 grams to 600 grams is not able to survive.

Commissioner Mirpurkhas Shafique Mehar briefing the journalists of Islamabad said that as many as 326 children have died in 2014, 398 in 2015 and 29 children till date 20-1-2016. He said that as many as 26 children died in Mithi hospital and 3 in other hospitals. He said that there are several reasons of death of new-born babies including early marriages, multiple pregnancies (birth asphyxia, severe pneumonia, neonatal sepsis, respiratory distress syndrome etc).

MITHI - Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) Chairman Siddiqueul Farooque on Sunday said that child mortality in Tharparkar was not linked to malnutrition but there were other reasons causing deaths, including premature birth, low weight, pneumonia, diarrhea, cardiac ailments and other medical conditions.

Talking to reporters during his visit to Civil Hospital here in Mithi, he expressed satisfaction over the provision of health care and other medical facilities at the hospital. He said that basic health and other facilities were available at the hospital and patients were being treated in a better manner.

Farooque said that there were a lot of problems in Tharparkar and his team was on a detailed visit to the area to ascertain the core issues, their causes, and would try to find out sustainable solution to those problems.

Visiting federal team finds Sindh govt?s measures in Thar ineffective

MITHI: A two-member fact-finding team sent to Tharparkar by the federal government has expressed its dissatisfaction over the measures taken so far by the provincial government to ensure proper supply of food and water as well as availability of healthcare facilities to the people affected by a drought-like situation in parts of the district.

After visiting Islamkot, Nagarparkar, Dahli, Chhacchro talukas and remote villages of the district over the past few days, the team comprising Federal Minister of State Siddique-al-Farooque and MNA Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani observed that the situation had already led to the death of a large number of children below the age of five and some expectant mothers.

The team claimed that scores of the reverse osmosis (RO) plants installed to ensure availability of drinking water to residents of various villages were found lying out of order during its visit.

In the past few years it has become a norm that a few hundred newborn babies and infants will inevitably die in Sindh?s beautiful Tharparkar desert every year. Conflicting figures are quoted in the media and by government functionaries, about the number of deaths and their causes. Even if one fully agrees with the official version, unfortunately, there are no visible actions on part of the government of Sindh or the federal government to tackle the deadly issue on sustainable basis. As a result, we see the inhabitants of Mithi offering special prayers in temples amid a rising death toll of children and their helplessness in the face of it. Irrespective of the fact of whether 200-plus children died in the past 50 odd days or 75 newborns and infants breathed their last in Tharparkar?s hospitals, even a single preventable death is criminal. Why are we unable to respond to this situation?

The nutrition challenge facing Sindh is substantial. Sindh has a dangerously high rate of nutritional stunting among children under the age of 5 (49.8 per cent) as compared to 43.7 per cent of the national average. The prevalence of underweight children is 40.5 per cent as compared to 31.5 per cent of the national average, while wasting prevalence is 17.5 per cent as compared to 15.1 per cent of the national average. As per the World Health Organisation?s standards, a national average of 15 per cent or above is labeled an ?emergency?. These figures have not changed significantly in the past decade and require special attention at all levels. I believe the figures in Thar region will be even worse than the provincial figures for Sindh.

Pakistan Army distributes 25 tons of rations in Thar

THARPARKAR - The Pakistan Army distributed 25 tons of rations among the affected people of Chachro in district Tharparkar in a two-day long relief operation.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations, besides provision of rations the army doctors also treated over 1,200 patients at the medical camp. Over the last year the Pakistan Army has distributed 574 tons of rations among 36,000 families and has treated over 40,000 patients.

In February, health officials of the Sindh government confirmed the death of a total of 143 children aged up to five years in Tharparkar district because of malnutrition and other causes since October last year.

This is a tragedy. What is shameful is the fact that Tharparkar is a Hindu dominated area of the country. Possibly that is why it is being neglected. In a report compiled by the Sindh government?s health department, the death toll during January in Thar has been put at 40. The official figures show that 31 children died in October, 28 in November and 44 in December last year.

Now let us compare this to the findings of our civil society. According to them, the death toll since January has risen to over 190 children. This is based on information gathered by journalists from parents, villagers and elected local bodies representatives. By exposing the lie of the Sindh government, now journalists are being taken to task by government officials.

MITHI: The members of National Commission For Human Rights (NCHR) visited Thar and expressed dissatisfaction over the worsening situation of the masses living in the drought hit district of Sindh province on Thursday.

NCHR members Justice (retd) Ali Nawaz Chohan, Anees Haroon along with other NRCP members told local journalists at Thar Press Club that due to droughts and the subsequent callousness on the part of the concerned functionaries, "situation in the district is worsening and is set to assume an alarming proportion".

SUKKUR: Four more children have died due to outbreak of the waterborne diseases and malnutrition in Thar hospitals taking the death toll to more than 290, according to the official during three months.

Three children died in Mithi Civil Hospital and one in RHC Diplo. Diya, 15 months, Reena, 1, and a newborn of Basheer Ahmed lost their lives while one-year-old Akash Lohar died in rural health center of Diplo town. The parents of the ailing children complained about lack of facilities and negligence of doctors and other medical staff in Diplo and Chhachhro towns.

DHO Dr Arjan Das told media persons that so far 139 kids have lost their lives since January 1 adding during the past 24 hours, 410 kids, mostly suffering from waterborne diseases and viral infections, were brought in six facilities of the district.

There have been a million editorials and op-eds about how the children of Thar are suffering. Political leaders have addressed this issue, yet the issue prevails. Horrifying stories abound in the media, about the widespread death toll of children in Thar; unbearable images of malnourished and stunted children in incubators and hospital wards have been displayed on our TV screens, day in and day out. According to press reports, 398 children died in 2015, and based on anecdotal evidence, this year shall once again see such a high mortality rate.

As more of these breaking stories are highlighted in sensational headlines, the government continues to vehemently deny responsibility for the crisis, claiming that these deaths are normal and occur every year.

There was a lot of hue and cry in the national media when the advisor to the chief minister on information, Maula Bux Chandio, said that children are dying in Thar because of the carelessness of their mothers, and underage marriages ? while another minister blamed a Thari mother for not practising family planning, and having a large family.

THARPARKAR - A newborn died at the Civil Hospital Mithi on Thursday bringing the death toll of malnutrition children in Tharparkar and other areas to 312 in the last the four months.

According to sources, the newborn was on ventilator in Civil Hospital Mithi, where he died during treatment. Currently, over 40 malnutrition children are being provided medical treatment at the Civil Hospital Mithi, the hospital sources said.

Malnutrition claims lives of 10 more children in Thar

MITHI: At least 10 more children died from malnutrition and related diseases in drought-hit Thar on Sunday and Monday, raising the unofficial death toll to 341 since Jan 1, this year.

Nine infants identified as five-year-old Aso Bheel, four-month-old Amo Lakh, ten-month-old Seeta, 30-days Dadu, five-month-old Ghulam Mohammad, ten-month-old Abdul Razzak and three other newborns died at the Mithi Civil Hospital while a newborn breathed his last in Baka Karan village on his way to the civil hospital.

Dr Jai Kumar, in-charge of the emergency center, said that so far 193 kids had died in hospitals and over 270 had been referred to teaching hospitals of Hyderabad and Karachi.

During the National Nutrition Survey conducted recently, the GAM rate in the province of Sindh were the Thar Desert is located, is 17.5 per cent and the Severely Acute Malnutrition (SAM) is 6.6 per cent. And according to the WHO guidelines, if the Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rate among children and women is above 15 per cent, it has to be considered a sever emergency situation.

Six more children die in Thar, drought toll rises to 380
MITHI: At least 6 more kids died in drought-hit Thar during past 24 hours infants died in Civil Hospital Mithi and one in Islamkot raising to the toll to 379 in past six months in drought-hit Thar.
According to health officials the number with the deaths of three kids on Friday toll rose 239 in six facilities of the district adding they told over 180 died only in the civil hospital of Mithi.
The health officials are uncertain about 355 those kids, who have been refered to teaching hospitals of Hyderabad and Karachi. DHO Thar Dr Chandar Lal told this reporter that so far more 53, 323 kids were treated in the hospitals during six and half months of this year.

MITHI: Ten more kids died in Mithi and Islamkot hospitals during past three days due to the undernourishment and outbreak of the waterborne diseases in drought-hit Thar. The infants of Mohammad Ismail, Bharoo Bheel, Jhaman Bheel, Harsinsh Bheel, Gagan Bheel, Tarpal Singh, Balchand Meghwar, Abdul Rasheed, Vastav and Wali Dad Khokhar lost their lives. With the deaths of ten more kids the death toll according to health officials has risen to 263, while according to unofficial sources the toll jumped to 404, from January 1.

Malnutrition continues to take toll on Thari children

MITHI: The outbreak of diseases and malnutrition were continuing to play havoc with the lives of newborns and minor children in drought-hit Thar as three more children died in Islamkot and Mithi on Tuesday, sources told Dawn.

Six-month-old Harish and five-month-old Allah Wasayo died in Rural Health Centre Islamkot while a minor child, Mukesh Kumar, died in Civil Hospital Mithi raising death toll to 433 of the year, according to unofficial reports.

However, health officials told Dawn on Tuesday that over the past seven months 289 children had died in hospitals of Tharparkar and 465 were referred to Hyderabad and Karachi for further treatment.

MITHI: Nine more babies died of malnutrition and diseases at Civil Hospital Mithi during past two days raising the toll to 329 this year according to the officials of the health department. Those died included infants of Kanji Bheel, Badal, Ramesh Kumar, Werso Mal and two months Atim, Parvati of three months, Bhojo of one month and Sarmad of one month.
According to the unofficial reports so far over 463 kids have lost their lives in Thar due to the outbreak of the diseases and malnutrition. While, the unpaid 598 workers of the health department continued their protest against the non-payment of their salaries for 14 months.

14 more children die in Thar

Mithi: Approximately 14 more children died in Thar within past three days due to malnutrition and outbreak
of diseases.

As per details received from Mithi, Thar, three month old Liaquat, six months old Pancho, one month old Jameel Ahmed, and two infants Abdul Hai and Imam Bux died on Friday.

Also, two month old Hussain, three month old Jalil, two months old Sarwan, and six newborns namely Parkash, Ranbeer, Zulfikar, Waseem Ahmed, Mohen Lal and Prem lost their lives in past three days.

The death toll including these 14 recent deaths rose to 496 this year.

According to details infants of Naroo, Ali Nawaz Soomro, Ali Anwer and Wero Kolhi, Mohammad Bux Lund, Prem Das, one-month Maria, Rabia of 13 months and four years Varshia, died at Civil Hospital Mithi raising the death toll to 361 since January this year.
