Pittsburgh Montessori scrambles to stem norovirus outbreak

Monday, October 31, 2011
By Eleanor Chute, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Principal Cynthia Wallace could see before the official attendance count that something was wrong at Pittsburgh Montessori PreK-8 in Friendship on Thursday.

In a school with typically high teacher and student attendance, seven teachers -- nearly a fourth of the staff -- had called off.

Nearly half of the 355 children were absent. A child threw up at breakfast in the cafeteria. And children coming to class said they were sick. One teacher had just five of 21 students in class.

The toll was 158 students absent at the start of the day, joined by another 20 who got sick during the day, Ms. Wallace said. An additional teacher also got sick.

Excerpt:
"Kane is doing all the right things," Allegheny County Health Department spokesman Dave Zazac said Tuesday about an outbreak of a norovirus, something also known as a stomach flu or gastroenteritis.
...
Zazac and Kane executive director Dennis Biondo believe visitors brought the virus in to the local center.

"While we're not discouraging visitors," Biondo said, "we're encouraging them that, if they are sick, they not visit, especially at this time."

Laboratory tests confirmed three cases, while approximately 30 others were said to be probable.

"They're isolating patients who have been confirmed as being sick," Zazac said.

"Anyone who is exhibiting the symptoms is being limited in their activities."
Kane McKeesport has 328 residents and approximately 300 staffers.

Suspected cases continue, with the last of six McKeesport units there having its first case Tuesday.
