EHD outbreak spreading; deer dead in Crawford County

Though there have been no confirmed cases of Epizootic hemorrhagic disease here in Washington and Greene counties, the outbreak appears to be spreading across Western Pennsyvania.

According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, it is investigating the death of nearly a dozen deer in the Pymatuning Wildlife Management Area in North Shenango Township, Crawford County. EHD has not yet been confirmed but is strongly suspected.

If these latest deaths are confirmed as being caused by EHD, it would bring the number of counties affected by this year?s outbreak to five.

Cases have already been confirmed in Beaver and Westmoreland counties, while the disease is suspected in the deaths of deer in Allegheny and Cambria counties...

HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 1, 2012 /PR Newswire/ -- Dr. Walter Cottrell, Pennsylvania Game Commission wildlife veterinarian, today announced that epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) has been confirmed as the cause of death for a deer in Montgomery County...

...In addition to Montgomery County, EHD already has been confirmed this year in Allegheny, Beaver and Westmoreland counties, and is suspected in Cambria and Crawford counties. SCWDS has confirmed deer mortalities from four different strains of the EHD virus in 15 states this year.
