Camp Hill School employee could have swine flu

An elementary school employee in Camp Hill, Cumberland County, has been diagnosed with a probable case of swine flu in what could be the first case of the illness in a midstate school since classes began this fall.
The case at Shaeffer Elementary School comes as state and federal officials warn that this year could be a busy flu season, especially in schools and on college campuses.

Camp Hill School District officials would not provide details about the employee's job or level of interaction with students, but said the employee was following recommended procedures for staying home until he or she has been fever-free for 24 hours without the help of fever-reducing medications.
The district doesn't plan to recommend that parents have children tested, said Katherine Gottlieb, director of student services. Health decisions should be made by parents and health professionals, she said.
The district informed parents of students in a letter Monday that a staff member had a probable diagnosis of the illness but said the school is functioning as normal.
Gottlieb said custodians are being vigilant in cleaning desks and other surfaces that students touch.
Elementary school nurses have been instructing students on hand-washing techniques, telling them to sneeze and cough into their elbow and telling them not to share food or utensils, as per state and federal guidelines, Gottlieb said.
In the event of a flu outbreak, Gottlieb said, teachers would use their individual Web pages to post assignments and grades and communicate with students and parents. (Continued ...)
