OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - The Osceola County Health Department says a 29-year-old female resident has died from the Swine Flu virus. Officials say this is the first confirmed Swine flu death in the county.

The Osceola County Health Department and Florida Department of Health are actively monitoring the current swine influenza situation in the United States and beyond. The Florida Department of Health is also proactively responding to this event by enhancing surveillance and monitoring efforts for influenza across the state in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Since seasonal influenza season has not officially started, any influenza occurring now will be carefully assessed to see if it is due to the new strain H1N1. Some good hygiene tips to adhere to are:
1. Practice good respiratory etiquette by covering your cough.
2. Frequent hand washing can lessen the spread of respiratory illness.
3. Stay home if you are sick.
The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include:
? fever / chills, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache and fatigue
? Occasionally diarrhea and vomiting
Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions such as asthma. People experiencing cough, fever of 100?F or higher plus with or without any of the above symptoms should see their physician. If you think you have influenza please call your healthcare provider and discuss whether you need to be seen in their office, in a nearby hospital emergency department or stay home.

Nine new swine flu-related deaths reported statewide
Three Central Florida swine flu cases among the fatalities

Nine new swine flu-related deaths -- three from Central Florida -- were reported today by state health officials.

In Orange County, a 25-year-old woman and a 70-year-old woman died from swine flu complications. And in Osceola County, a 27-year-old woman died. The other deaths were reported in Hillsborough, Dade and Lee counties.

So far, there have been 41 laboratory confirmed swine flu deaths in Florida.

People with respiratory illness should stay home from work or school to avoid spreading infections, including influenza. Health officials recommend avoiding close contact with people who are coughing or appear ill; avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth; and washing hands frequently.

People experiencing cough, fever and fatigue, possibly along with diarrhea and vomiting, should contact their physician.

H1N1 Victim's Dad: She Was Healthy
Woman, 27, Is First Swine Flu-Related Death In Osceola County
POSTED: Wednesday, August 5, 2009
UPDATED: 7:50 pm EDT August 5, 2009
KISSIMMEE, Fla. --

The family of a 27-year-old swine flu victim said the woman had no prior health issues and was misdiagnosed repeatedly before dying of the virus.

The Osceola County Health Department reported its first swine flu-related death on Wednesday.

The Health Department did not report any other details, but the victim's family spoke to Local 6.

Pedro Campos said his daughter, Mildred Campos, did not have a history of illness that could have contributed to her death.

According to the family, the woman was treated for an upper respiratory infection several times and given antibiotics beginning July 26. They said she was already in critical condition when given Tamiflu at the hospital.
The family said she died on Friday. Pedro Campos is being tested for the virus.

The Osceola County Health officials said they are monitoring the virus very closely.

"This tragic death is a sobering reminder that influenza is serious and can be fatal. Our staff continues to monitor this disease in our community and reminds residents to take precautions to avoid the flu," said Belinda Johnson-Cornett, administrator for the Osceola County Health Department.

Ten people have died of swine-flu related causes in Florida in the past week, and 41 people have died in the state overall.

The state Health Department said it will no longer be keeping a tally of all the cases in the state because there are too many, but they will continue to monitor deaths related to swine flu.

With school starting Monday in Brevard County, and in a few weeks in the rest of the counties in Central Florida, schools are putting plans in place to try to slow the spread of the virus among students.

Health officials are asking anyone who is sick to stay home and advising everyone to wash their hands frequently.

The health department initially said the victim was 29 years old.
