With the start of Florida's hurricane season only months away, Floridians are beginning to prepare their homes and communities to meet the threat that storms pose to our state each year. When we replenish our families' hurricane-supply kits, stock water and non-perishable goods and secure the roof and shutters, we do so not so much out of a sense of impending doom but because we appreciate the value of planning...

While we take precautions to protect the safety of our families this hurricane season, we need to encourage our legislators to support Crist's wise proposal. A failure to prepare for the worst could have devastating consequences. U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt recently said, "Any community that fails to prepare, with the expectation that the federal government will at the last moment be able to come to the rescue, will be tragically wrong."...
