12 tribals die due to water-borne disease

Berhampur (Orissa), July 26 (PTI) At least 12 tribals, including a six-year-old child, have died of a water-borne disease in Orissa's Ganjam district, officials said here today.
The tribals, showing symptoms of diarrhoea and fever, hailed from Tumba and Buratala gram panchayats under Patrapur block.
Reports were received from the area that about 12 tribals have died of the water-borne disease in the past ten days in the region, Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Ratnakar Behera said.
The situation in most affected villages is under control with no fresh deaths reported since Saturday, the CDMO said.
Besides, over 50 persons in Batarasahi, Bilugaon, Abandia, Rampha, Atapathara and Mandarada villages of the block were suffering from various water-borne diseases.
Despite two health centres functioning at Tumba and Buratala, most of the patients had been admitted in the public health centre at Manjusha in Srikakulam district of neighbouring Andhra Pradesh since Manjusha is nearer to their villages.
