Measles advisory issued; Health unit warns of potential exposure at Orillia hoops tourney

(Staff) - The Simcoe Mus- koka District Health Unit is asking anyone who attended a basketball tournament at Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School and Park Street Collegiate Institute on Saturday to watch for symptoms of measles following confirmation of a case of the disease in the Orillia area.
Symptoms of measles include a runny nose, cough and fever with red, watery eyes that are sensitive to light. These symptoms are followed by a blotchy rash that usually begins on the face before spreading over the entire body. White spots may also appear on the gums and inside the cheeks.
The health unit would like anyone who may have been exposed to measles to call Your Health Connection at 721-7520 (1-877-721-7520). After hours, call Telehealth Ontario at 1-866-797-0000.
Anyone who has been exposed and develops symptoms should see a health-care provider, but only after calling first to avoid exposing others to the illness.
Toronto's public health agency last Thursday confirmed a fifth case of measles in the city in the past four weeks. A case in Guelph has also been linked to the Toronto cases.
Although the health unit is calling it an outbreak, the risk of infection is considered low because of high immunization rates.
Toronto Public Health said four of the five current cases are linked to the Ontario Science Centre.
In Guelph, a health alert and containment/prevention measures have been put in place.
